Welcome from the Chair

2017-2018 Letter from the Chair, Nicole Bourbon – November 2017

Dear UCI Staff,

As a UCI Alum, I am excited to lead UCI Staff Assembly for the 2017-2018 year! We have a talented group of 18 volunteers comprised of elected administrative officers and committee chairs, 4 ex-officio members, several engaged past council leadership, and many enthusiastic committee members, who actively work to promote the interests of you, our colleagues.

UCI Staff Assembly is committed to our mission of promoting the interests of the staff, to bolster communications between staff and the administration, to provide input to the decision-making process on issues affecting staff and the University, and to support and develop activities which serve UCI staff and the community. UCI Staff Assembly is staff centered and focused on promoting engagement and enhancing staff culture in the following ways:

Staff Support and Empowerment:

• Helping Hands Program

• Excellence in Leadership Program

• Staff Scholarship Program

Staff Dialogue and New Narratives:

• Lunch with Leadership Series

• Coffee Talk Series

• Council of UC Staff Assemblies (CUCSA) representation

• Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on Staff (CACS) representation

Staff Appreciation and Focus on Wellness:

• Annual Staff Picnic, Pancake Breakfast and Halloween Costume Contest

• Night at the Arts Program

• Discounted Athletic Tickets

Staff Community and Partnerships:

• Service opportunities with community organizations throughout Orange County

• Days of service to address community needs on campus

• Stocking Stuffers Event and Collection Drives to serve others in need

We are off to a great start for 2017-18! So far, we’ve collected over 600 clothing and accessory items donated by UCI staff for contribution to Working Wardrobes, who impact the lives of 90,000 men, women, veterans and young adults, who have overcome adversity and seek to re-enter the workforce. This collection totaled 868 pounds of reusable clothing, championing UCI’s Sustainability’s zero waste efforts. In August, we celebrated our staff at our annual picnic, themed “An Afternoon at the Movies”, enjoying lunch in Aldrich Park with over 3,000 of our colleagues from across campus and the medical center. In September, our Community Relations committee teamed up with Surfrider Foundation’s Huntington Beach Seal Beach Chapter for a beach clean-up where UCI Staff dedicated their Saturday morning, contributing to the cleanup of over 12,000 pounds of trash to date for 2017! In October, we convened as a council to plan the calendar of opportunities and to consider new programming ideas in alignment with our mission.

Our CUCSA delegates represent issues pertaining staff and this year will actively participate in work groups focused on financial wellness and mental health wellness. The mission of CUCSA is to maintain and enhance communication within the university community on matters of interest to staff employees in accordance with California laws and regent policy.

I would like to personally thank Chancellor Howard Gillman, Provost Enrique Lavernia and Associate Chancellor and Chief Human Resources Executive, Ramona Agrela, for their support of Staff Assembly. I would also like to thank our generous donors who support The Mike Puritz Staff Assembly Career Enhancement Scholarship Program.

Most importantly, we couldn’t thrive as a council without your interest, feedback and spirit of volunteerism. If you would like to join our efforts, comment on your experience, or share a staff concern of interest, please do not hesitate to reach out by contacting us. As a reminder, our council meetings are open to all staff, and often feature guest speakers who update us on important initiatives for UCI.

I look forward to an exciting year ahead and I hope to see you at our upcoming events, including the “Take 15” PB&J sandwich making and donation through UCI’s Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, taking place Thursday, November 16th from 10:30am – 1:30pm at the Cross-Cultural Center Ring Room, and Staff Assembly’s Fall Open House, taking place Wednesday, November 29th from 11:00am – 2:00pm at the Student Center Art Gallery Lobby! Come learn about upcoming engagement opportunities, ways to become involved, and network with other UCI staff.

Zot!Zot!Zot!

Nicole
