Winter Update from the Chair

2017-2018 Winter Update from the Chair, Nicole Bourbon – February 2018

Dear UCI Staff,

The spirit of volunteerism is in the air! Because of you and your colleagues across campus, UCI Staff are making an impact in our campus community and beyond. In November, you joined us at the “Take 15” event as part of Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week in partnership with our campus and community partners. 45 UCI Staff joined fellow faculty and students to make 1,500 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches in under 2 ½ hours, and deliver to nonprofits (Share Ourselves (SOS), Someone Cares Soup Kitchen, The Rescue Mission of Orange County, City Net and Lighthouse Outreach Ministries) throughout Orange County. It was a call to action, and you answered! But, you didn’t stop there.

For the 8th year, we joined together as an Anteater family to sponsor 83 families in need over the holiday season. 85 sponsors comprised of individual UCI Staff, units and departments showed compassion and shared their generosity with fellow colleagues at both main campus and the medical center. A huge thank you to all those who participated, and a special thanks to our Helping Hands Program lead volunteers, Andrea Wiley and Stephanie Jean-Hinojosa who dedicate their time to ensuring confidentiality around family and sponsor matching. Thanks to the work of our council volunteers, we offered the Bilingual application as an option online for the first time this year.

We are excited for 2018 program opportunities that are in the works. But first, let’s take a quick look back at some of the 2017 highlights!

Thank you to all those who came out to see us at the Staff Assembly Open House. We are proud to share that 47 UCI Staff took advantage of the complimentary headshots we offered. Don’t forget to upload those to your email profile. We had fun engaging with over 60 UCI Staff who came to learn more about UCI Staff Assembly and how to become more involved. In December, 44 UCI Staff gathered for the 2nd annual Behind the Badge event in partnership with UCI PD. We hope you enjoyed learning more about the services and operations of our colleagues who work hard to keep our community safe.

Our CUCSA delegates met in December 2017 at UC Santa Cruz, and continue to focus on action plans related to government advocacy, financial wellness, mental wellness, diversity and inclusion, and internal operations. The mission of CUCSA is to maintain and enhance communication within the university community on matters of interest to staff employees in accordance with California laws and regent policy.

We continue to fill up our Lunch with Leadership series featuring senior officials from across campus. A huge thank you to our fall 2017 and winter 2018 speakers: Dr. Victoria Jones, Chief Global Affairs Officer, Dr. Rameen Talesh, Dean of Students and Assistant Vice Chancellor of Student Life and Leadership, Dr. Marcelle Holmes, Associate Vice Chancellor of Wellness, Health and Counseling, and our Executive Leadership Sponsor, Ramona Agrela, Associate Chancellor and Chief Human Resources Executive. These forums provide access for all UCI Staff and encourage dialogue around new or evolving areas, new leaders and new initiatives happening at UCI.

I would like to personally thank Chancellor Howard Gillman, Provost Enrique Lavernia and Associate Chancellor and Chief Human Resources Executive, Ramona Agrela, for their support of Staff Assembly. I would also like to thank our generous donors who support The Mike Puritz Staff Assembly Career Enhancement Scholarship Program.

We couldn’t thrive as a council without your interest, feedback and spirit of volunteerism. If you would like to join our efforts, comment on your experience, or share a staff concern of interest, please do not hesitate to reach out by contacting us. As a reminder, our council meetings are open to all staff, and often feature guest speakers who update us on important initiatives for UCI.

I look forward to an exciting 2018. I hope you will find Staff Assembly Council a helpful resource as you explore opportunities to become involved and network with other UCI Staff. I hope to see many of your at the upcoming day of service with our Community Relations committee, at Second Harvest Food Bank – Orange County.
