Dear students and colleagues,

The “What Matters to Me and Why” series continued with a captivating talk by Al and Trish Nichols Chair in Clinical Neuroscience and Professor of Neurology and Neurobiology & Behavior, Dr. Claudia Kawas. We would like to thank those who attended and invite those who could not attend to view recordings of past events here.

In collaboration with UCI Staff Assembly, the next event will take place on Wednesday, May 16, with a presentation by Thomas A. Parham, Ph.D., Vice Chancellor, Student Affairs and adjunct faculty member at the University of California, Irvine.

Dr. Parham was recently selected as the next president of California State University, Dominguez Hills and will leave us at the end of this academic year to assume a new role. The CSU Board of Trustees cited his exceptional history of working with students from diverse backgrounds and his unwavering commitment to student achievement.

Dr. Parham grew up in Southern California and received his bachelor’s degree in social ecology from the University of California, Irvine. He completed his master’s degree in counseling psychology at Washington University in St. Louis, and received his Ph.D. in counseling psychology at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. He is licensed to practice psychology in California.

Prior to his position as vice chancellor, Dr. Parham served as UCI’s Assistant Vice Chancellor for Counseling and Health Services, Counseling Center Director, and Director of the Career and Life Planning Center at UCI. Before returning to UCI in 1985, Dr. Parham held an appointment on the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.

Since his return to Orange County, Dr. Parham has been an active member of this community contributing his talents in the areas of social advocacy, community uplift and youth empowerment.

“What Matters to Me and Why” encourages reflection about values, beliefs and motivations in the lives of those who shape our university. The series explores personal journeys – choices made, difficulties encountered, commitments formed and joys revealed – with the hope that these stories will help us to understand diverse pathways in life, work and leadership. Such understandings are crucial for fortifying tolerance, strengthening bonds, and supporting the virtues that make UCI a great institution.

We encourage you to join us May 16 to hear Dr. Parham’s individual journey and unique perspectives. Please visit www.chancellor.uci.edu/whatmatters to register for the event.
